French term

carré - terrasse

French to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Motorboat specifications
Hello all,
I'm translating material on various motorboats, really not sure how to express the following. It's the carré bit that's confusing me! Thanks for any help....
La plage avant dispose d´un bain de soleil de plus de 3 m de long. Elle se transforme aisément en un carré - terrasse pouvant accueillir 8 convives tandis que la banquette arrière prévue pour 4 personnes est équipée d´un grand volume de rangement.
Proposed translations (English)
5 +6 deck saloon

I agree with Jane on this one.
Anne Greaves (asker) Jan 23, 2015:
Hi Jane not sure. Have found that carré seems to mean saloon in various other contexts, don't see how that would apply on the deck.
Jane Phillips Jan 23, 2015:
Could this be as simple as a square terrace area with space for eight?

deck saloon

The "plage avant" is the foredeck, this part of the foredeck cn be either used as a sundeck or easily changed into a "deck saloon".

Yes, "carré" is "saloon" but this is up on deck, so it simply becomes "deck saloon" in English.

Check out Google images with["sundeck + "deck saloon"].

Thanks Nikki sounds right to me

agree Charles Davis : Seems reasonable. It's clearly a compound noun; if it meant a square terrace it would presumably be terrasse carrée.

agree Tony M : Yes, of course! 'carré' is the nautical equivalent of 'salon' or 'lounge', so it makes perfect sense to have a 'lounge area' up on deck.
