NATO strategy, Cold War in Germany
In case of an attack by the Warsaw Pact in West Germany, NATO troops were to delay that attack along the Weser Lech line. That was called "Verzögerungslinie" in German, but what was the English term -- "delay line"?

containment line/(first) line of containment
is used in many contexts and would seem to fit this one as well.

Hi Mara. Containment is widely used in the cold war context especially in Europe but it's not an accurate match in this case. Looks like "delaying line" would be the better fit after all: "The enemy was to be delayed starting at the Weser Lech line." https://books.google.com/books?id=mca84R1sjpIC&pg=PA161&lpg=...

Note from asker:
Thank you Michael. I see this is used in connection with Asia/Pacific. My text is about the Cold War in Germany. Do you know if "containment line" was used in that time and context, too? The verb used in this context is "delay". |

Thank you, David. Although that seems to belong to a different period of the Cold War, it helps me in that context. Great! |

initial line of resistance
Forward of that, the delaying zone reached to the Ems-Neckar line, and forward of that the initial line of resistance ran along the Weser and Lech Rivers.
