have a bent for
Try to distance yourself from the ST and apply a bit of idiomatic English:
Ellas no se inclinan por la pintura.
-->
They had no bent for painting.

Following up Asker's note below:
The fact that the writer is a 'teenager in 1874' is context that you could usefully have mentioned when posting your question. Unless it's drawn to their attention, everyone here tends to assume everything refers to 'today', not to 'times past'.
With that in mind, you'd do well to check that 'having a bent for' isn't a linguistic anachronism.

Note from asker:
"They have no bent for painting" in the sense of "natural interest in it" sounds like what I am looking for. Thanks. The writer is a teenager in 1874 |

interested in
They weren't interested in/inclined to look at/predisposed to look at/disposed to look at the painting.
For me, the phrase "not interested in" is the easiest because you can plug in the noun "painting"; the others take verbs.

Note from asker:
No se refiere a una pintura en particular sino al arte de la pintura en general en oposicion a inclinarse por clases de bordado, por ejemplo. |
