Arabic term

الامنحانات التكميلية

Arabic to English Tech/Engineering Education / Pedagogy University certificate
I am translating a Syrian degree certificate which lists all the student's marks. It says:

علامات التي نالها في كل مقرر من عام ١٩٩٩/٢٠٠٠ وحتی الامتحانات التكميلية للعام الدراسي ٢٠٠٣/٢٠٠٤

Does anyone know a good translation for الامنحانات التكميلية

Thanks very much

Chakib Roula Nov 26, 2014:
Dear Jane22,
Sorry but I still stick to my opinion you are wrong in your answer as supplementary is not at all the Arabic equivalen of لتكميلية since the word in Arabic means something that completes the other unless it is considered incomplete whereas supplementary is something added to something already complete.Best regards
Jane22 (asker) Nov 26, 2014:
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments. I chose Ahmed's as the most suitable answer for my context as the website and Facebook page he attached were Syrian and they talked about. supplementary examinations
Arabic & More Nov 26, 2014:
Hi Chakib,
I apologize if it seemed that my comment was directed specifically towards you. Although I did not clarify this in my initial post, I was actually responding (in general terms) to Br. Ahmed Ghaly's comment in which he said "it is not good to use the disagree feature." As a community, I have noticed that we are a bit over-sensitive to disagrees from our colleagues. As you said, however, a "disagree" can enrich the debate, which is something that we can all benefit from if we are open to different ideas and perspectives.
Chakib Roula Nov 25, 2014:
Dear Amel,
Thank you a lot for your note but personally and honestly ,I disagreed with my esteemed colleagues but gave a "complementary" explanation to my "disagree" for the sake of finding the most appropriate and closest term to the Arabic one and enriching the debate.I really love this group and of course the pair as I have met with wonderful and very professional and polite colleagues. Many thanks to you all.Yours respectfully Chakib
Arabic & More Nov 25, 2014:
Dear Colleagues,
In my opinion, it is okay to use the disagree feature when you disagree. The important thing is that you explain why you disagree. A lot of people hesitate to disagree because they do not want to offend others, but there are times when it is appropriate. If you are the Asker, it really helps to know how strongly people feel about an answer. If you think someone is wrong for disagreeing with you, then you can respond accordingly...but we should feel free to state our opinions (hopefully in a respectful manner). Someone who disagrees might be right or wrong just like someone who answers might be right or wrong. In the end, one has to weigh the evidence and decide what makes the most sense. It doesn't help anyone, though, when people remain silent about their opinions. A "disagree" is not a personal assault...it is merely a statement regarding one's opinion.

Chakib Roula Nov 25, 2014:
Dear colleagues,
Please bear in mind that "supplementary" and "complementary" are semantically different terms.Supplementary is something that you add to something already thorough or complete whereas complementary is something that completes incomplete thing. In other words,if you do not have a complementary item, the thing remains incomplete but supplementary is extra item for enriching or reinforcing.

I totally do not agree with my colleague, yet i do not want to involve myself in hassles and controversies. I gave a proof from a college in Syria and Syrian websites. Every opinion must be substantiated and founded.

Good Luck!
Peer comment(s):

disagree Chakib Roula : Supplementary does not correpond to the Arabic adjective used but rather complementary.

You are surely mistaken, what is your proof, i gave a proof from a website of a Syrian College, so please provide me with your proof, it is not good to use the disagree feature,i have never used it with any colleague though i see many literal translations

Bridging Examinations

The best translation for تكميلية is 'bridging'. But it is usually used with 'courses'.

Hope this helps.
