German term

extrovertierte Verweigerung

German to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Art book/exhibition catalogue
This is from the blurb to an art book/exhibition catalogue on Dieter Roth. It is the section marked that is causing particular problems.

The contradictory nature of his extrovertedly turning away...? From what? Or what is he refusing?

Thanks for any thoughts...

Discussion

Rachel Ward (asker) Nov 20, 2014:
Explanation from the author is that it means refusal of the art scene and also refusal to differentiate between art and life. If that helps at all.
Rachel Ward (asker) Nov 19, 2014:
@ Jonathan That should definitely be a word!
BrigitteHilgner Nov 19, 2014:
Mein Eindruck Widerspruch zwischen dem extrovertierten Wesen des Künstlers und seinem Domizil auf einer abgelegenen Insel
Jonathan MacKerron Nov 19, 2014:
assertive refusnikism If it isn't a word, it should be.
philgoddard Nov 19, 2014:
I wonder if the idea is refusal to fit in, rejection of convention.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to Cilian, and to everyone else for your thoughts."

extroverted withdrawal

or "extrovert non-compliance"

A contradiction, because extroversion is more likely to be associated with sociable, compliant behaviour.

Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : a contradiction, as you say, I cannot make sense of it...

"Widersprüchlich", as requested by the source text (Roth refuses to be available or comply with social expectations, which is unusual for an extrovert character (blurb, as Rachel said – does not have to make sense ;-)

Another suggestion. Or maybe "rebellion"?

strident (shrill) defiance

Extrovertiert in this context means that Dieter Roth is showing off - that's a necessary ingredient here and must come across in the translation. I think at least one other contribution has accomplished that. But at this point, I am not yet convinced by the solutions offered for "Verweigerung"...

Compare with sentence below:

"Although his strident defiance of the white establishment, his theatrical capacity for high life and his flaunting of the publicly declared "rules of the game" have all helped make him a hero to his people..."
