German term

gegenstandskonstitutiv

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
From a handbook for civics teachers:

Methods generating the subject matter? Methods constituting the subject matter? I'm not getting any hits for the various combinations I've tried, and there must be a corresponding term in the English-language educational context (object-constitutive gets a couple Kant hits, but that's not the right track, I reckon).

Discussion

mill2 (asker) Nov 15, 2014:
@Horst Yes exactly. But now how to say it in English.
Horst Huber (X) Nov 14, 2014:
It seems to be about "Etablierung des Unterrichtsgegenstandes im
Unterrichtsprozess." The Uni Hildesheim seems to be focusing on it.
mill2 (asker) Nov 12, 2014:
@Andrew aha haha That one went right by me. Discretion forbids any further comment.
Lancashireman Nov 11, 2014:
Bluff and counterbluff Sorry, mill2. It was gallows humour. Here at KudoZ, compound adjective queries generally attract solutions that terminate with ‘-oriented’, ‘-related’ or ‘-focused’. As the authors of the source text are clearly bluffing, I think you are entitled to bluff back.
James Nixon Nov 11, 2014:
Another idea Course related methods, related possibly being a bit stronger than oriented and using course so that you dont have two different meanings for subject in the sentence.
mill2 (asker) Nov 11, 2014:
thanks for the sympathy But I think oriented isn't strong enough. The point (I believe) is that the methods generate or produce the subject matter itself, they're performative, as it were. Simulating a mediation session with your students brings about democratic competencies just by doing it (as opposed to standing in front of them and telling them that democracy is about dealing with conflict and finding compromises, etc.)
Lancashireman Nov 11, 2014:
Mindblowing source text, mill2 Maybe they will be satisfied with something ending in "-oriented"?
mill2 (asker) Nov 11, 2014:
ps. If I use something with "subject" I have the problem of what to do with "Sache" in the second sentence - right now I have "are inherent in the subject matter itself" for that bit.

(methods) constitutive of their (particular) subject matter

Perhaps this might work. Compare with link below:

"Such reflective practice requires that our educators can make connections between the knowledge, research, scholarship and methods constitutive of their particular discipline and their own practice (Eisner,1985; Shulman,1987; Willis and Shubert, 1991)."
