English term

MPWM

English to French Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Power supply
Variable frequency power supply, taking the microprocessor as its core, is manufactured by MPWM.

Discussion

Didier Fourcot Oct 20, 2014:
MID? It could be interesting also to understand how PWM or MPWM can be translated with MID, the standard accepted and referenced by colleagues is MLI

So you do not assign points because the customer uses poor English and suggests something never seen elsewhere?

This is not my concept of help from colleagues either
DLyons Oct 20, 2014:
Points don't matter but acknowledging that people tried to help does. There doesn't seem to be a good reason to give no points to what look like three acceptable attempts.

In situations like this I just add the asker to my list of filtered users :-)

Delphine Berger-Ramos (asker) Oct 20, 2014:
Hello. Here is my client's answer: Can you translate by MID and put in brackets "(PWM en anglais)" or "(MPWM en anglais)" when necessary so that the technicians can see the difference, thanks.

Didier Fourcot Oct 16, 2014:
manufactured? MPWM does exist in specific applications
http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=15602241
but the term that hurts my understanding is "manufactured", I understand "achieved" here and the "variable frequency power supply" is usually called a VFD: Variable Frequency Drive
Delphine Berger-Ramos (asker) Oct 16, 2014:
I will inform you as soon as the client will give me his interesting explanation... thanks!
Tony M Oct 16, 2014:
@ Asker Aha! I guessed as much!

In that case, I assume you are aware that 'manufactured by [electronic mode]' is grammatically incorrect.

I suspect you might find multi-MLI would be OK, or indeed retain it as MMLI.
Delphine Berger-Ramos (asker) Oct 16, 2014:
I can answer you right now: the document has been written by a Chinese engineer... I think I will simply ask him to tell me if he makes a difference between MPWM and PWM.
Tony M Oct 16, 2014:
@ Asker The fact that it says "...is manufactured by MPWM" tends to suggest that 'MPWM' is the name of the manufacturer; otherwise, there is something seriously odd about the EN syntax, since MPWM is an electronics operating mode, not a manufacturing process.

Before we waste too much time on pointless speculation, can you just confirm if the EN in this document overall is irreproachable — or if perhaps you have encountered other instances of dodgy (possibly non-native?) EN?
DLyons Oct 16, 2014:
They are similar. MPWM is typically Interleaved PWM (maybe impulsions entrelacés?).
Delphine Berger-Ramos (asker) Oct 16, 2014:
The document refers to PWM and MPWM (Multi Pulse Width Modulation). PWM is "modulation de largeur d'impulsions "in French, but is it the same then for MPWM? Thanks for your help.
