German term

Oberarzt i.V.

German to English Medical Medical (general)
This is from Switzerland. Discharge letter:

signed:

Dr.med. XY
Oberarzt i.V.
Klinik fuer Innere Medizin

I know that i.V.= in Vertretung= p.p., but it feels strange to say "p.p. senior physician". Should I say "acting attending"??
I am clueless here. Bitte um Hilfe :)

Thanks

Leave out the i.V. - for Oberarzt see below

You can leave out the "i.V." - Have a look at this http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/business_commerc...
"In the UK at least, it is simply assumed that a person signing business or official correspondence has the authority to do so."
or this

and for Oberarzt, try this

senior physician/consultant/registrar
Peer comment(s):

agree Donald Jacobson : Thanks for an excellent explanation. So, am I correct then, in thinking that it would have to be by proxy for the Chefarzt?, which would sound ridiculous in English.

No, you can just leave it out. It is redundant in English. It just means that he is representing the clinic, which goes without saying in English

by Proxy

i.V. = In Vertretung
Unterschriftsbestandteil
Peer comment(s):

neutral Armorel Young : Yes, it stands for "in Vertretung", but it doesn't translate as "by proxy" - that would imply that he is substituting or deputising for someone, whereas in fact he is just signing on behalf of the Klinik

neutral David Moore (X) : Agree with Armorel

agree Anne Schulz : I think you are right: some (senior) Assistenzarzt temporarily acts as Oberarzt (while the latter is on vacation, maternity leave, or whatever). Could "Acting senior/registrar/..." be an option?
