English to Chinese

This is from a proofreading job that's already done, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I know what the phrase means, of course, but off the top of my head I could not think of a translation that really clicked, so let's see if anyone can do better:

(It just wasn't meant to be! They've been beaten in the final!
--> It just wasn't meant to be so .......
"so" = "They've been beaten in the final"

From my understanding of the text. It's an exclamation that the game ends so fast and the result is out of the speaker's expectation.
Please correct me if I' wrong.

Discussion
The expression is of course interpreted as related to fate, but its tone is so colloquial instead of formal. I doubt if it is necessary to cite "fate" in the translation. For example, in a reverse case, the Chinese expression "他不该死的" as in an event of accident, it's just an expression instead of a formal address to Fate or God.
