Medical (general)
The following sentence quotes a pharmacist justifying his/her use of placebos in an anthropological study of placebos. I have translated it thus but was wondering if there is a better phrase in English for 'charge medicamenteuse'? Thankyou in advance.
'Quand la demande émane de la famille, qu'il y a une charge médicamenteuse déjà importante et qu'ils veulent soulager et réduire cette charge médicamenteuse (par exemple si on veut éviter une hépatite pharmaceutique) avec des doses trop importantes de paracétamol, ben là, pourquoi pas un placebo?'
When the request comes from the family, and the patient is already taking a large amount of medicines and they want to relieve or reduce this medicinal overload (for example to avoid pharmaceutical hepatitis) with excessive doses of paracetamol, well there, why not use a placebo?’

i.e. it is the existing medication load that includes excessive doses of paracetamol and the use of placebo would mitigate this:
... and reduce this medication load (e.g. to avoid pharmaceutical hepatitis) that includes excessive doses of paracetamol; well, in that situation, why not use a placebo?
Better phrased as:
... and reduce this medication load that includes excessive doses of paracetamol (e.g. to avoid pharmaceutical hepatitis); well, in that situation, why not use a placebo?
I don't understand why taking excessive doses of paracetamol would reduce their drug intake, but maybe a medic can explain this.
