Kiln
A kiln is a thermally insulated chamber, a type of oven, that produces temperatures sufficient to complete some process, such as hardening, drying, or chemical changes. Various industries and trades use kilns to harden objects made from clay into pottery, bricks etc.[1] Various industries use rotary kilns for pyroprocessing—to calcinate ores, produce cement, lime, and many other materials.

The earliest known kiln dates to around 6000 BC, and was found at the Yarim Tepe site in modern Iraq.[2] Neolithic kilns were able to produce temperatures greater than 900 °C.[3]
Other uses include:
To dry green lumber so it can be used immediately
Drying wood for use as firewood
Heating wood to the point of pyrolysis to produce charcoal
For annealing, fusing and deforming glass, or fusing metallic oxide paints to the surface of glass
For cremation (at high temperature)
Drying of tobacco leaves...

Chapter 5 - Earth pits for charcoal making

5.1. The pit method
5.2. Technical and cost data for pit charcoal production

Using earth as a shield against oxygen and to insulate the carbonising wood against excessive loss of heat is the oldest system of carbonization and surely goes back to the dawn of history. Even today it is perhaps used to make more charcoal than any other method. It is, therefore, worthy of careful study to find out its advantages and disadvantages. Obviously it keeps its place because of its low cost. Wherever trees grow, earth must be available and it is natural that mankind turned to this cheap available non-combustible material, as a sealing material for enclosing the carbonising wood. - http://www.fao.org/docrep/x5328e/x5328e06.htm
