I'm translating a list of regulations for guests using the wellness centre/spa in an upmarket hotel. One of these specifies use of "ciabatte" to enter the spa area. Should be easy, but I can't figure out what the equivalent should be in English... certainly neither slippers nor sandals sounds right, but I could be wrong! The full phrase is: "l’ingresso al centro benessere è consentito solo con l’uso delle ciabatte". Thanks, Sarah.

: I agree with spa slippers. They could be flip-flops or slippers. The important thing is that they are open shoes and made of materials that do not retain dampness. Rubber is perfect whereas leather, cloth or other materials would not be suitable.

That's what Italians wear to the pool! This is UK English, obviously.

: not flip-flops, which have a strap over the foot (which makes them go "flip flop". Ciabatte don't go "flip flop", more "shuffle shuffle", Japanese style. They don't have a strap over the foot, but a "nose" into which you put you toe, and no strap.
