Description of (perhaps) seventeenth century restoration of a Tuscan villa:

Le volte e le pareti sono finite con un intonaco, di cui è stato steso a ferro unicamente lo strato di arriccio privo del fino, realizzato con malta di calce di colore grigio chiaro, aspetto granulometrico arenaceo e consistenza parzialmente friabile.

I can understand the meaning of 'steso a ferro' but would like to know if there is a technical term in English please.

se fosse stato l'ultimo strato di intonaco, sarebbe skim-coated, ma visto che si parla del primo strato grezzo, credo che sia più levelling. Buon lavoro!
