Thank you all for brain storming with me.
Bearing in mind that I'm translating for a non-specialist audience, I'll go for something like "early philosophical thought"
thanks again!
philgoddard May 12, 2014:
I think it means early (and especially Greek) thought about the fundamental questions of existence.
P.L.F. Persio May 12, 2014:
In German, scienza aurorale is wondrously translated as Wissenschaft im Zustand der Morgendämmerung, see http://www.gleichsatz.de/b-u-t/begin/gauge1.html. Not very useful, I know...
P.L.F. Persio May 12, 2014:
What do the English-native colleagues think of incipient thinking?
P.L.F. Persio May 12, 2014:
@rocca_m: It would be extremely useful. You could ask this question to the German colleagues, or we can try to find it out for ourselves. Best of luck!
rocca_m (asker) May 12, 2014:
It could be useful or interesting to know the original German term ???
P.L.F. Persio May 12, 2014:
I think it refers to the pre-socratic philosophy. Here's another explanation of the concept: (...) per fare nostra la domanda di Heidegger, che cos’è metafisica? (http://www.gianfrancobertagni.it/materiali/filosofiacomparat...

Thanks philgoddard. That is exactly the concept I should translate. It's in a list of themes presented in a lecture: from "pensiero aurorale" to relativism and nihilism ...
Dear colleagues, is there an exact translation for the concept?
philgoddard May 12, 2014:
I'm not sure whether the text before and after this will be of any help if it's a list of subjects.
Here's an explanation of the meaning: http://books.google.com/books?id=3woyfO8EukoC&pg=PA93&lpg=PA...

More context please-before and after

Proposed translations

(the thought) at the dawn of the European/Greek philosophy

I also heard "auroral thought/philosophy" used, but, alas, mostly by Italiam writers (it googles a bit too... have a look)
