German term

Krabbentürmchen

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture Guide book to Vienna
I'm translating a guide book to Vienna and stuck on this term. It's from a brief overview of various artistic and architectural styles.

Many thanks for any help.

Um 1900 wollen die Secessionisten
**Krabbentürmchen** und Barockgirlanden
durch florale Schnörksel ersetzen. Dann
der Verzicht auf Ornamentik beim Adolf-
Loos-Haus am Mi chaeler platz. Den Bruch
mit allem Gewachsenen wagt erst Hans
Hollein mit dem Haas-Haus. Trotzig schillert
die Baukunst von Jahrhunderten in seiner
Glasfassade am Stephansplatz.

turret with crocket pinnacle / finial / terminal

A crocket: http://www.finedictionary.com/crocket.html

The crocket ornamentation may be on a spire, pinnacle; it may be upper terminal or finial on a small tower, canopy or turret. One would need to see an image in order to find the correct terminology. Hence a 3 rather than a 4.

agree Armorel Young : I'd simply call it a "crocketed turret" and avoid the pinnacle/finial issue

Yes, that would be fine, too. It depends how detailed a description it is really.

Krabben

Englisch wohl „crocket“. Wikipedia sagt: „A crocket is a hook-shaped decorative element common in Gothic architecture“ - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocket
