Verginia Ophof Mar 4, 2014:
yes, it makes sense and cents :) ...
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 4, 2014:
AHA, thank you. You mean my interpretation.

How shall I put it, an ape is a monkey but a monkey is not necessarily an ape.

You should not take 'langs de deur' too literally here.
I read it as any form of selling that involves personal interaction of sales persons and customers.

Does this make sense?

Verginia Ophof Mar 4, 2014:
@ Barend was referring to your earlier post, and that is that ! :)
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 4, 2014:
@Virginia I still don't understand your question.
You say would that be.

What is 'that'?
Verginia Ophof Mar 4, 2014:
@Barend exactly what Kitty posted.
Had not seen that.......still working on the coffee
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 4, 2014:
@ Virginia What do you mean?
Verginia Ophof Mar 4, 2014:
@ Barend van Zadelhoff would that be: basic door to door sales ?
freekfluweel Mar 4, 2014:
@BvZ da's juist kreatiev! ;-)

Another option would be: traditional field sales. Or to partly borrow Barend's suggestion: good old field sales.

basically/simply at the door ...

but it can also mean 'back to basics', like in the old days when salesmen simply went from door to door trying to sell their ware. The sentences look a bit as if they had been word-for-word translated in the first place and 'basaal' may have been translated from basic(ally), simple(simply).

good old direct selling

Outside sales, good old direct selling, there are many customers to be found outside of the obvious marketing channels.

In fact, 'basaal langs de deur' may have been used to paraphrase 'outside sales' (look at the syntax and context).

outside sales:

Since the advent of the telephone, a distinction has been made between "inside sales" and "outside sales" although it is generally agreed that those terms have no hard-and-fast definition. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act defines outside sales representatives as "employees [who] sell their employer's products, services, or facilities to customers away from their employer's place(s) of business, in general, either at the customer's place of business or by selling door-to-door at the customer's home" while defining those who work "from the employer's location" as inside sales. Inside sales generally involves attempting to close business primarily over the phone via telemarketing, while outside sales (or "field" sales) will usually involve initial phone work to book sales calls at the potential buyer's location to attempt to close the deal in person. Some companies have an inside sales department that works with outside representatives and book their appointments for them. Inside sales sometimes refers to upselling to existing customers.

In this case, sales people would visit potential customers at their place of business.

Direct selling is the marketing and selling of products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail location. Peddling is the oldest form of direct selling. Modern direct selling includes sales made through the party plan, one-on-one demonstrations, and other personal contact arrangements as well as internet sales. A textbook definition is: "The direct personal presentation, demonstration, and sale of products and services to consumers, usually in their homes or at their jobs."

The Health and Wellness Industry has offered many passive income enthusiasts a great way to earn and be financially independent. The marriage of the good old “direct selling” and “network marketing” strategies with internet and e-commerce have given tremendous revenue potential to those who seek and embrace its opportunities.

Too literal for me but you are the boss. :-)

Thanks for your help. The links were certainly useful; I decided to keep the 'door-to-door' element in my translation.
Peer comment(s):

agree Kitty Brussaard : Of wat mij betreft liever nog: good old door-to-door selling. / OK, point taken, though I'm not sure yet if I fully agree :-).

// I am honestly on the other end of the spectrum and would take it broadly here. Besides, I take a little pride in my phrasing. :-)
14 hrs
Volgens mij is 'basaal langs de deur' een parafrasering van 'outside sales' (antwoord) plus gaat het hier om bezoeken van bedrijven: selling at the customers' places of business, niet 'door-to-door selling at homes': zoals ik juist zeg, houd het breed.
