Ernst and Resch distinguished the apparent and true placebo effect: the former is the response observed in the placebo group of a randomized controlled trial. The apparent placebo effect may be due to factors such as the natural history of the condition under study or regression to the mean rather than reflecting a true placebo effect that can be attributed to the placebo intervention.
