vacuum (up), vacuum-cleaner (approach), data vacuum etc. all seem to have been used quite a lot in connection with the NSA scandal in English, maybe thats where the German came from - but I dont see an easy way of incorporating any of those options into your sentence and would personally, probably, go for data mining, collecting, harvesting etc.

I would leave it out, for the following reasons. 1. Transatlantisch presumably means American.
2. "Wie die NSA" presumably means the NSA, since that is the organisation causing all the controversy. They're talking not about the NSA and other bodies, but about the NSA.
3. The sentence uses "Daten" twice. Repetition is OK in other languages, but not in English.

I don't think English has a singular word that encompasses the idea of Datensauger, but I'd go with "mass data collectors" as this encompasses the idea. I';ll keep brain storming though, something may yet appear!

How I would phrase it.

The link says:

However, I believe Datasauger is sort of a new word creation (although the word is thrown around in German media quite a bit), therefore it's probably ok to get creative with the translation. I also wonder,who the other Datasauger are, since the sentence uses the plural and implies there are others besides the NSA?
