Discussion

patrickfor Jan 21, 2014:
@ormiston: Are we here to translate, ot tell the potential buyer what (you think) is the "truth"?
I am not sure the client would share this idea ... :-)
Très couture is not couture...
ormiston Jan 21, 2014:
I feel that 'très couture' means that it (merely) LOOKS like a high fashion item. I share Elizabeth's reservation about 'very'
patrickfor Jan 20, 2014:
@elizabeth: Yes I know but when the french write "très couture" it is not equivalent to "couture" it's insisting on the quality, the look... So I guess "very couture" is more adequate.... and seems to be quite common in english too....
Elizabeth Tamblin Jan 20, 2014:
We also use the word "couture" in the same way.
patrickfor Jan 20, 2014:
"très couture" has to do with the technics and way of working of the Haute Couture. Hand made, quality material, experienced workers....
Nothing to do with fashion/trend....

couture/designer

I'm not sure that I would say "very designer," or "very couture," although I have seen it done. Perhaps "Very much a couture/designer item, the body…"
Peer comment(s):

agree Arthur Kölzow : I like "very designer" since it fits the the ungrammaticality of the original.

Thanks - I think it can be used that way.
agree Lorraine Dubuc : Designer-like garments or very designer sounds better

Thanks for your comment, Lorraine.
agree patrickfor : it's not about designer it's about quality and class. Couture is good

Very couture

Peer comment(s):

neutral Lorraine Dubuc : I do not like this frenglish type of expression even if it is 'très fashion'. Nevertheless, I understand your point.

it's about what English, or Americans would like to read here...
agree emiledgar : regardless of the frenglish nature of this, it's what is used very often. Just like French fashion mags being full of outrageous franglais, the anglophone equivalents do the same with frenglish.//Right! Been documented in English since the early XXthC

thanks but "couture" is an english word... no matter where it comes from. We have "parking" in french dictionaries. In my eyes when a word is in a dictionary it BELONGS to the language. //our languages are living they take from each other. That's good!

fashionable

Je ne crois pas que l'on puisse dire 'très couture' puisque cela ne veut rien dire. Mais on peut parler d'un vêtement à l'allure mode, designer, etc. ou un vêtement tendance.

I like the idea of : 'trend setting style' which sets a standard of fashion, designer-like and fine quality touch in the finishing touch.
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : fashionable doesn't really reflect what is meant by 'couture' imo

How are you today? trend setting style is probably better
