In the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, as in other lower houses of Parliament and other legislatures, members refer to each other as honourable members etc. out of courtesy, but they are not entitled to the style in writing. When members are Queen's counsel they will instead be referred to as the honourable and learned member, with serving or ex-serving members of the military (formerly less of a rarity than today) being styled the honourable and gallant member.

Other honorifics used in addition for those members in relevant professions ("honourable and gallant"[7] and "honourable and learned"[8]) are no longer used, at least in the Commons.

The term " learned counsel ". occasionally as found in the expression " my learned friend" is a polite custom for the way one lawyer in court refers to another lawyer in court ( usually these are QCs) rather like the way an MP refers to other MPs as " honourable members" or ( if they have been in the army ) as "Honorable and gallant" member
