Fully fashioned knitting machines are flat knitting machines that produce custom pre-shaped pieces of a knitted garment. Instead of knitting a whole rectangular sheet of fabric, instructions from a knit pattern on a punch card or computer file guide a fully fashioned knitting machine's needles to add or drop stitches to create custom two-dimensional shapes appropriate to the desired finished garment structure. Pod finoćom mašine podrazumevamo broj igala na određenoj dužinskoj jedinici prema kojoj je numerisana mašina. Tako na primer ako je mašina finoće 10, numerisana po engleskom sistemu numerisanja (1e” = 25,4mm) onda to znači da na dužini od 25,4 mmm imamo 10 igala. Mašina je utoliko finija ukoliko se na određenoj dužinskoj jedinici nalazi veći broj igala.

Gauge, commonly abbreviated as "GG", is one of the most important terms in the sweater knitting world. Gauge is a unit, measuring the number of needles in one inch width of the machine needle bed. Typical range of gauge on flatbed knitting machines is from 3GG to 14GG. At 3GG, there are three needle hooks per inch on the needle bed, thus creating a more coarse look sweater. And at 14GG, there are 14 needle hooks per inch on the needle bed, creating a finer looking sweater. Gauge is one of the main components that defines the thickness and look of a sweater.

Typically, the thicker the sweater gets the lower the gauge number. Therefore, 3GG machines is more often used in the winter time to knit chunkier sweaters and 12GG is used year round to knit cover up cardigans that can be worn in all seasons. Anything higher than 16GG creates a style that would feel more like a knit product (such as Tee's) rather than sweaters to the consumers.

In knitting, the word gauge is used both in hand knitting and machine knitting; the latter, technical abbreviation GG, refers to "Knitting Machines" fineness size. In both cases, the term refers to the number of stitches per inch, not the size of the finished garment. In both cases, the gauge is measured by counting the number of stitches (in hand knitting) or the number of needles (on a knitting machine bed) over several inches then dividing by the number of inches in the width of the sample.

Dakle "gauge" = broj očica po dužnom inču kod ručnog pletenja i to nije uvek isto, ne može se standardizovati, zato se i prave probe na uzorcima pre pletenja; finoća stroja = broj igala po dužnom inču = oznaka GG; ukoliko se to preračuna u metričke jedinice (cm) oznaka je E.

Suština je u tome da kod ručnog pletenja nije moguće definisati "gauge" brojem (za razliku od onoga što imamo u kontekstu: "The minimum gauge of fully fashioned knitted product is 14."), stoga se radi o stroju, tj. o finoći stroja.
