Ourlet du quaternaire

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Géologie
Hello

I don't understand 'ourlet' in this sentence:

L'ourlet du quaternaire est discernable par les gesses tubéreuses.

La gesse tubéreuse est une espèce de plante herbacée vivace.

I have found the following definition of 'ourlet': terme désignant un type de végétation, principalement composée de plantes herbacée vivace.

So could 'ourlet du quaternaire' be something like 'quaternary herbaceous vegetation'?
Proposed translations (anglais)
4 Quaternary fold
3 plant life of the quarternary period

Vegetation? I note that your definition that associates "ourlet" with vegetation is taken from http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ourlet_forestier. As used there, in a phytosociology context, it would translate into English as vegetation of the "forest margin". However, that does not seem at all relevant or appropriate to the geological context of your source text. Would it be possible to identify a forest margin for that period? Why does the source text have "L'ourlet du quaternaire" rather than "L'ourlet forestier du quaternaire"? During a period of several million years one might expect forest margins to have moved substantially.

plant life of the quarternary period

If this is a geology text, my guess is that quaternaire just refers to the Quaternary geological period, so I'd go with a more direct translation "the plant life of the quaternary period".

Translating 'ourlet' as 'plant life' instead of 'vegetation' generates far more Google hits:

Quaternary fold

I don't believe that the meaning of "ourlet" has anything to do with plant life. However, the quarternary fold is characterised here by the remains of plant life found within it.

"Uplifted Holocene terraces are important indicators of active tectonics, and its presence can be interpreted as a geomorphic expression of active faulting. Therefore, the Quaternary fold-and-thrust belts along the Chelungpu fault are one of the best areas for neotectonic studies. "
