Discussion

Saleh Dardeer Nov 13, 2013:
To Ms. Doaa, Salaams,
I hope this finds you well. while reviewing my old answers looking for something, I came across this question. Could you please clarify in Arabic what you mean by "obligation due to technicality"? Also, Elm Al-Maanay is a branch in the Arabic rhetoric, as you may know, so it is better to quote the Arabic explanation and then discuss the translation. Best regards!

connotation/ indication by association

This is one of three indications that are studied in the books of logic and Usool Al-Fiqh under the chapter of Dalalat or semantics

the example of Iltzam or Iltizamiyyah indication is that when someone says fire by association you will think of heat, light, scorch, etc.

So, I suggest indication by association

or

We may also just say Dalalah of indication

Connotation is a term used by logicians and very close to Dalalat Al-Iltizam as opposite of denotation that is very close to Dalalat Al-Mutaabqah

To Doaa
Regardless of the translation you found, Iltizam in Arabic means that the word implies a meaning away from its words that has a certain association in mind, e.g., when I say I am thirsty, it will be understood that I want to drink water though my words did not say water or drink at all...

Whereas your suggestion "technical" means that jargon that people of certain industry agreed to use. This is called in Mantiq (logic) and Usool Al-FIqh "Wadh`"
وضع أي وضعوا هذا الاسم لذلك المسمى

Bearing in mind the context of the question and its classification and the Arabic meaning of this term, your proposed translation needs consideration regardless of the source.

BTW, could you plz provide me with that book of El Alma`any

Thanks for understanding

disagree Doaa Alnajjar : This is pure literal translation. Please refer to the English copy of Elm Elma'any Book. Iltizam here is not referring to association, it refers to obligation due to technicality. It is more explained in the book I mentioned earlier. (available to share)

الالتزام كون اللفظ دال على معنى خارج عن مسماه له لزوم في الذهن مثلما أقول عطشان فيفهم السامع أني أريد ماء بخلاف ما اقترحتيه وهو ما يعني ما تواضع عليه الناس أو أهل صنعة أو حرفة وهي الدلالة الوضعية. انظري إضافتي أعلاه

technical connotation

The ‘intelligible connotation’ is understanding a matter out of another one. The first then is meaning or sense and the second is the indicator. This connotation is either expressive or non-expressive, divided into three parts: ‘identical connotation’ such as ‘human’ and ‘lion’ meaning only human and lion; ‘inclusive connotation’ such as house to mean the roof or the wall; ‘technical connotation’ such as jargons used for industries, legislation and linguistics. The basic components of this Science are simile, trope, metaphore and metonymy.

Literal translation will be misleading, please avoid it.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Saleh Dardeer : It is not technical because technical is a translation of وضعية. Anyway, the proposed translation in this part needs great consideration because there is misunderstanding. the Arabic version refers the meaning of Iltzam in jargons of so&so, not used for
