German term

Simulation ist Handarbeit

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Traffic simulation
Paragraph that follows:

Discussion

Anna McVeigh (asker) Sep 5, 2013:
Thank you all so much, this has been an interesting discussion!
Alison MacG Sep 3, 2013:
@ Anna How are you going to translate the final sentence (Damit die Simulation tatsächlich realitätsnah wird, ist Handwerk gefragt.) in the paragraph you quote and how would you like the heading (I'm assuming here that "Simulation ist Handarbeit" is a heading) to relate to that? Could you perhaps use something like "The craft of simulation" for the heading?

demands skill

Skill is nedded for the simulation to reproduce reality as closely as possible.

Handwerk and Handarbeit are not the same thing.
Handarbeit refers to things made by hand
Handwerk is trade, craft; fig. business, for instance: er beherrscht sein Handwerk > He knows his business, i.e. he is good at it.

My reading of Handwerk here is in the fig. sense.

Thank you very much, this helped me the most!

manually

...therefore the simulation should be manually runned/supervised

(as opposed to let the computer has its way...)

Simulation is a hands-on skill

manual skill sounds too "crafty",
maybe you could also say simulation requires dexterity?

agree Nora Morrison : realistic simulation requires dexterity

sounds good!
agree Hans-Jochen Trost : ... and the closing sentence could use "ist Handwerk gefragt" -> "a craftsman is required" (or craftsperson, if it matters).

Simulation requires practical skills

Perhaps even "Simulation is an acquired skill" although that's not as appropriate in my opinion.

I think the term "Handarbeit" is a bit of a misnomer here since there's much more to this than physical dexterity. The term they end up using in the body of the text, "Handwerk", is much more accurate, in my opinion.
