German term

Vorschießen

German to English Social Sciences Sports / Fitness / Recreation Marksmanship
From the records of a German Schützenverein in Texas, circa 1890, the "Schießregeln" are addressed:

"Bei dem Anfang des ersten Spiels mögen die Schützen so schießen, wie sie zum Schuße fertig sind.

Nachdem jeder anwesende Schütze seinen ersten Schuß abgegeben hat, soll der Schreiber die Namen in der Reihenfolge, wie sie eingetragen sind, aufrufen u. schießen lassen.

Vorschießen ist nicht erlaubt."

Unfortunately, there is no further context. Does "Vorschießen" refer to "practice shots" or "shooting before one's name is called" or something else? I can't seem to find a definition of the word that works in this context...

Discussion

Timoshka (asker) Aug 16, 2013:
Another possibility in English Also found some rules of an American gun club, which include the concept of "advance shooting" or "shooting in advance":

When for whatever reason, a shooter knows in advance that they will be unable to shoot with their team, that shooter will be allowed to shoot in advance as needed. Advance shooting of more than three (3) weeks shall require prior approval from the League Management Committee. When shooting in advance, all scores must be posted, the score sheet date stamped and signed by the shooter and trapper, and the score sheets marked...

Thanks, Johanna... I tried searching through some English-language rules and regulations for shooting competitions and did find the phrase "pre-competition shooting for score," which seems to tally with the German-language source you located...
Johanna Timm, PhD Aug 16, 2013:
it means that only the results of the actual competition day will be counted ( no shooting prior to the event) http://www.schuetzenkreis-en.de/downloads/Vorschiessen.pdf

prior/advance shooting

If a shooter is unable (usually hindered by a higher ranking shooting competition) to take part at a shooting, he/she is allowed to shoot (usually only the qualifying shooting) before the others.

same order should be followed

Hi Timoshka,

Like you guessed, it could mean that participants have to follow the order in which the names are entered. My reason being the phrase "...in der Reihenfolge, wie sie eingetragen sind..."

Moreover the text is talking about what is to be done after the first shot is made ("Nachdem jeder anwesende Schütze seinen ersten Schuß... ".

Please note that the text mentions that the first round of shooting can be made in any order desired based on which participant is ready to take the shot. But once the first shot is made, the order in which the shot is taken has to be entered and then the same order has to be followed.

So may be it means that once the participants finish the first round of shooting, they have to follow the same sequence in the second round and not jump the queue...

anticipate the shooting order/the shot

At British public school CCF = Combined Cadet Force and army: 'Do NOT anticipate the order.'

Shooting order (sequence) rather than order = command to shoot

PS it's extremely time-wasting when web refs. are rejected with Enter field. or Invalid Format and can't be posted.
