Profile

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature General
I am writing an essay about learners' individual characteristics that affect the success of his language learning (intelligence, aptitude, motivation, learning styles, etc.).

My original title is: what makes a successful L2 Learner? But I think it is too ordinary, so I am thinking of changing it to "Profile of a Successful L2 Learner".

I am not sure the word "profile" can be used here, and whether it changes the meaning of the whole title.

Could someone give me some advice? Thanks!

@ Tina I think you'll find it's standard jargon for '2nd language' (cf. T.E.S.L. = Teaching English as a Second Language)
Tina Vonhof (X) May 27, 2013:
L2? What is an L2 learner? Will all your readers know what it means?
John Alphonse (X) May 27, 2013:
It can be used, not incorrect, but I wouldn't prefer it for too many negative references in current popular usage, "Profiler" etc. that connote criminal or deviant behavior. How about just "Characteristics" or "Qualities" or "Traits"? Bests with the project.

I think it's perfectly fine — and I don't see any serious negative connotation.

'Profile' is used a lot in HR: 'the right profile for the job' etc., and I think it conveys exactly what you are looking for here.

agree Charles Davis : I agree: no negative connotations. Very suitable, I'd say.
