I'm translating a CV for someone who's Abschlussnote at university was '1,7'. As she'll be sending the translation to British employers, I'll have to provide a British equivalent for that grade so that it makes sense to those reading it. Would you say that this corresponds to a first class degree or a second class upper division (2:1)? My research seems to place it on the cusp. I obviously don't want to give her a lower grade than she achieved, and not give her credit where it's due, but also don't want to make it look like she achieved a higher grade and potentially lie on her CV on her behalf without her knowledge.

On my Diploma Supplement (which is a document endorsed by the European Credit Transfer System), I only got a German-style grade (i.e. 1,x). However, a "1,7" in Germany is a good "B" in the ECTS scheme, see link 1. And what a good B is in the UK depends largely on what conversion scheme you want to use, it appears. I would use the version you yourself suggested (second-class honours) and would wrap it all up as seen above.

: agreed that this grade would be equivalent to a 2:1. UK university websites can also be a helpful source as they will generally provide information on 2:1 equivalencies for overseas applicants

In Switzerland, it is exactly the opposite: 6 = sehr gut, 5 = gut, 4 = genügend, 3 = schwach, 2 = sehr schwach, 1 = unbrauchbar
