Discussion

Nikki Scott-Despaigne Apr 9, 2013:
Know the feeling. I'm the suspicious sort too. A number of years back I invested in French and English original language naval architecture books, you know, the first year intro course type tomes. They have come in handy over the years. It may be about time I updated them, come to think of it.

Acutally I did but I wasn't sure it sounded right! I thought maybe there was a special term
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Apr 9, 2013:
@Jessjess Actally, I should have asked whether you had conducted Google searches, in context, with "start/end of life". Both seem to be used quite commonly in naval and shipping contexts when describing the life of a vessel. Nothing I can find suggests any special term.

PS: Thanks for the context.
jessjess (asker) Apr 9, 2013:
OOps sorry Nikki, I forgot to write my text with the extract.
This is all I have, I hope it helps, thank you for your help!

Could we have the full context please?
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Apr 9, 2013:
@Jessjess Please could you provide your terms in a fairly large extract of the original. Terms presented as "stand-alone" put us in no better a position than anyone looking in a dictionary. Targeting answers is difficult in such situations.

Trials Services
BMT Defence Services is able to prepare, conduct and analyse the results of progressive speed trials in order to obtain precise assessment of performance over the ship life and compare this with the predicted performance. This can be done for both new build vessels at the start of life or partway through the life of the vessel to check the performance and the effect of retro-fit propulsion devices or vessel treatments.

Ditto therefore for your other term.
