Stran. Indigenti Urgenti

Italian to English Medical Medical: Cardiology Patient hospital report
Hi there,
At the bottom of a patient report I've got a table showing conclusions the "discharge colour" and then the "regime erogaz" (which I have translated as "Disbursement system" and under that it says "9 Stran. Indigenti Urgenti". The only thing I can think of is that the patient doesn't have to pay because they're below the poverty line. Is that right? What does "stran" stand for? And is there an "official" English translation?

I was wondering whether "destitute" is more formal than "indigent"... "indigente" in Italian is a bit formal, definitely more than "poverissimo", for instance..

Hi! I also think that "stran" means "stranieri". Italian health system generally provides care to all poor people, regardless of the country they come from and of a residence permit...

This link ells about the health care system in Italy and "l'esenzione del ticket per stranieri non in regola con le norme di ingresso e di soggiorno, di indigenti e casi d'urgenza". I think the words in Suzannes question are elencated to explain the category of payment, and as S. writes, it is about a poor foreigner who has been in urgent conditions and therefor falls under the category "exemption from ticket".Unfortunately don't know the equivalent official term in english, but "Foreigner, Poverty, Urgency???

Careful. It is stranieri, but... it may be that the foreigners who are so eligible are only those from EU countries instead of all foreigners, so needs checking IMO. It may also be that eligibility depends on the region where the hospital is, so check there first if you can for the circular or declaration which outlines the system so as to have this detail.

Emergency care for destitute non-EU nationals

I'd use "non-EU nationals" rather than "foreigners"

[Codifica] 9 = Altro: individua le prestazioni urgenti e comunque essenziali erogate ad assistiti stranieri extracomunitari non iscritti al SSN. Tutte le prestazioni rese sono a carico dell’assistito; in caso di indigenza la spesa è a carico del Ministero degli Interni.

I also prefer "indigent" to "destitute". To qualify as "indigenti" (a legal term) these people have to sign a "dichiarazione di indigenza", i.e. a statement (or affidavit) of indigency
