I am inclined to translate this as "a key player" but looking for a better term, as it doesn't quite fit as well as I'd like, help much appreciated thanks

Going on the fact that a protaganist is the central or "leading" role in a film/play etc.
I believe they are saying that this company will re-enter the world of sports at the top of their game due to being sponsors of team xxx.
