competition

This meaning would make more sense in what context we have here.

From Collins Robert "esprit d'~ spirit of competition, competitive spirit"
Example sentence:

Create competition between divisions

agree philgoddard : The asker could have have looked this up in a dictionary.

Thanks :)
agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : In context, a "spirit of competition" would be more accurate. It does relate to a feeling, so spirit does the trick for. BTW, i does exist in English and it can mean the same as the French : strive to equal or to excel. The competition idea works well.

emulation

Why not?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Catherine De Crignis : sometimes "emulation" and "émulation" are synonymous ; also "competition" may be perceived as somewhat derogatory, unlike "emulation".

rivalry

As an alternative to competition
Peer comment(s):

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : "Rivalry" can be a little strong for "émuler". "Jealous rivalry" is described in one source as obselete:http://www.thefreedictionary.com/emulation. Not that much of a false friend either, altho' less used in ENG than in FRA.

I didn't mention Jealous you did. In the sense of emulating i.e. to copy it is a false friend. Ultimately it depends on context though i.e. whether contxt is stronger or weaker as you implied. Also Oxford def., is different to Free def.
agree gkshenaut : create a rivalry sounds more natural to me than create a competition
