transphy Jan 29, 2013:
Without any ambiquity:-'Excess' stated in ANY Insurance Policy, is the OBLIGATORY amout paid by the Insured in any damage.
Example:- If the damage is to cost $201 and the 'excess' is $200 then,
The Insured pays $200
The Insurer pays $1

disagree transphy : Not true. As you state 'excess' is any amount over and above the sum insured. By this logic, if the damage is $1000 and the sum insured is $600, you are saying that the 'excess' would be $400?? Not really, Maya. The 'excess' is only $200.

In the example the excess is $200 and, say, the damage will cost $600.
The Insured MUST pay the 'excess' which is $200 and the Insurace Co. will pay $400. For ANY Claim THE EXCESS stated in the Policy must be paid first.
However, if the damage is $199, the Insurance pays nothing. It is within the 'excess' the Insured must pay FIRST. So, it is NOT worth lodging a claim.
In my personal case, my 'excess' with my car insurance is £250.
If the damage is, say, £2000, MY OBLIGATION is only £250.
