: I like 'indifférencié', but can't help feeling that 'aveugle' sits perhaps less well with 'bullets' — kinda suggests they just spray a machine gun around and hope for the best ;-) (Oh dear, perhaps they DO!)

Thanks! I tried to focus on the term "blunt instrument" only - independently of what is the "blunt instrument" or for what kind of purposes it's used // (in this case they probably do "spray and pray (to hit only the right target/if there's any)"

Ici, je pense que "preparing" à surtout le sens d’anticiper. Malheureusement il est impossible d'anticiper des imprévus (qui par définition ne le sont pas). De plus, "imprévu" n'est pas une traduction assez fidèle de "hazard" (cf. lien vers the free dictionary).
Toutefois si l'on veut absolument utiliser "imprévu', voici une autre proposition:
"se préparant à affronter les imprévus et les risques avec un seul outil mal adapté"
Mais il me semble qu'on s'éloigne trop du texte source.
