Japanese term
欠歯
Japanese to English
Tech/Engineering
Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Engines
The context in which this term is found is: 「クランクセンサが欠歯から欠歯の間に検出した歯数が56枚でない」. I researched the term and there seem to be some type of gear called 欠歯ギヤ.
Any help would be appreciated.

missing tooth
The crank sensor has not detected 56 teeth from one missing tooth to the next.
This is a gear with intentionally missing teeth, where the missing tooth positions are used for detection.

Note from asker:
I think Roland's explanation fits the context. One Google search result of 欠歯ギヤ shows an example of this type of gear. Visualizing it this way, I would render the sentence as "The crank sensor did not detect 56 teeth from one toothless portion to the next". |

sector gear
「欠歯ギヤ」でしたら、sector gear ではないでしょうか。

Roland Hechtenberg
: A sector gear has sections with teeth and sections without teeth, which is not necessarily the case here.

: I think this it is referring to a particular sector of a sector gear, not the gear itself. I.e. there are less teeth than expected in one of the toothed sectors (literally "the sector between toothless sections" in the example).
