Mining & Minerals / Gems
sustainable mining / Colombia
I am having a lot of trouble unpacking this sentence. Internet searches related to the topic haven't produced any useful info.
This comes from a report on Colombia's achievements in sustainable development and efforts to reduce environmental impacts of mining and other production activities. There is no additional context.
"Capacitamos mineros en mineria sostenible. Se capacitó a 700 mineros en temas relacionados con producción más limpia *en beneficio del oro*, encadenamiento productivo, legislación ambiental y minera para legalización y formalización."
Are they saying that cleaner production will somehow "benefit" the gold itself?? Or is "en beneficio de" just an expression here meaning something like "cleaner production for extracting gold"?

extraction/recovery of gold
In Chile (and possibly other countries in Latin America) they use "beneficio" to mean extraction. See dictionary + link:
‹mineral› (Chi) to extract

of gold
I don't know why they've said "en beneficio del", but it's pretty clear from the context that it simply means cleaner production of gold, ie without using toxic chemicals to extract it.

gold beneficiation
....beneficiation .. is one of the dirtiest parts of gold recovery.
Although, outlawed in most countries, highly toxic mercury, cyanide and chlorine are still used illegally in many parts of the world for gold extraction/beneficiation. Mostly in S.America, Asia and Africa.
