Thanks Barbara. Yes, I think the "avvolto" is a kind of roofing , you're right!

Hi I have noticed that this is also described as a 'copertura ad avvolto' (http://www.arco.org/Storia/storia3-2-2.asp), so it should refer to a particular (local?) roofing technique.

As avvolto means covering essentially from avvolgere I think this would do it. The prison was built over...
