Spanish term

vino turbio

Spanish to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture Security
apparently some sort of low-quality wine which I have never heard of despite sampling quite a wide range of wines! can't seem to find it, even in my wine glossaries and online

"Turbid wine" also exists as a possibility here...

vino turbio or turbio

Vino turbio is a cloudy, white wine from Galicia. The cloudy effect is due to sediment particles suspended in the wine. The most common way of treating this term is to leave it in Spanish - either as vino turbio or as turbio - and include an explanation (cloudy white wine from Galicia).

It is true that very little information can be found about this wine online. It is a cheap, popular wine, which gets very little attention from professional wine writers.
Note from asker:
i'll probably go with this one, because i didn't realize this was a specific type of wine from a specific region (Galicia) but this became clear later in the text. i thought it was a more generic term and was going to put "cloudy wine", but now i'll just add that as an explanation
Peer comment(s):

agree Jenni Lukac (X) : I'd stick with the term that identifies it on the market + an explanation.

agree Gordon Byron : Coincidently, there was "vino turbio" on display in the supermarket yesterday, so I think Aisha's advice is the best approach

cloudy wine

Could this just be referring to sediment and/or impurities?

unfiltered wine

Basically, vino turbio is cloudy because it isn't filtered. Since "cloudy wine" in English is generally considered a fault, indicating perhaps lack of hygiene or some other problem in the fermentation process, perhaps "unfiltered wine" might strike a better note, playing up the "more natural" aspect.
Example sentence:

Al hablar de vino turbio, nos referirmos a vinos que no están filtrados y tienen partículas en suspensión.

Does an unfiltered wine taste better than a filtered one?

neutral Aisha Prigan (X) : I think it depends on the context. If the wine in question is the Galician wine, I would recommend using the Spanish term and including an explanation in English. If talking about unfiltered, cloudy wine in general turbid wine would work.
