I think that in English, the distinction is based not on whether the child is previously known to you, but on whether an intermediary is used, in other words between agency and independent/non-agency adoptions.
A distinction is also made between open and closed adoption, ie whether the child's identity is known to the adoptive parents, but that doesn't fit your definition.
