German term

Erbenruf

Habe schon an "Call (search) for heirs" gedacht.

Bin für jede Anregung dankbar!

Discussion

Vera H. (asker) Jul 18, 2012:
First, thanks to all for participating in providing valuable information. Judging from the document, it looks like it will be used to place strategic announcements in the US where the last relatives of the deceased had lived (they were mentioned in the document, along with location), and where descendents may live now, who are not known to anyone. It was not addressed to an individual. Thanks to AllegroTrans, who provided the English rendition of Article 555. I agree with AllegroTrans and Cetacea, that this is not a summons, but a call for heirs. This is what I decided to use. Again, thanks to everyone for chiming in - much appreciated!

Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : I do not think this would be an actual summons but merely a newspaper ad asking the heirs to come forward, e.g. contact the Notary // how do you "process" people if you don't know whether they even exist? Think about it
40 mins
The sources I posted are about an "official" processing, so it has nothing to with newspapers...
disagree Cetacea : Subject to article 555 of the Swiss Civil Code, a call for heirs must be made through the appropriate public channels, e.g. newspapers.

summons for unknown heir(s)

I have searched numerous sources and would go along with Jonas here. I think this link makes it absolutely clear.

Happy translating!

Judging from the sentence quoted by the asker it seems we are talking about a legal document here, hence my suggestion, "summons for unknown heir(s)". The family history website seems an inappropriate source for this particular context.
disagree Cetacea : We are not talking about legal documents at all. Subject to article 555 of the Swiss Civil Code, a call for heirs must be made through the appropriate public channels. You can't really send legal documents to anyone you don't know exists...

Article 555 Swiss Civil Code (ZGB)

Art. 555

II. In the case of unknown heirs

1 If the authority is uncertain as to whether the deceased is survived by heirs or whether it is aware of all the heirs, the authority must by appropriate public means call on all persons with succession rights to come forward and claim them within one year.

2 If no such person comes forward during this time and if no heirs are known to the authority, the estate passes to the state authority with right to succeed, subject to any action for recovery of inheritance.
