APPROS P&A

French to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) Presentation on business skills training
This is a response to the question, "What are the most urgent business skills training needs of your organization during the next 12 months?"

One of the participant's answers is:

"Formation Magasinier - Gestion des stock/Appros P & A - Inventaire - Magasinage"

I know this is something related to stock management. Is it possibly "administration of products"?

Discussion

Lara Barnett (asker) Jul 12, 2012:
company This is a motorcycle manufacturer (HD)
Catharine Cellier-Smart Jul 12, 2012:
As this is a participant's answer there's lots of things it could mean - it could be the name of a supplier, or an acronym specific or well-known to the company asking the questions. As Phil G. says, knowing what the company does MIGHT help.
philgoddard Jul 12, 2012:
What does the company sell?

yes but I don't think it's necessarily used in English in the original, cf my explanation.

Supplies - Forecast and Current

Appro = approvisionnement - supply

for the P &A I'm guessing it's 'prévisionnels et actuels' or some such - hence my level of confidence

so the whole thing would be: Stock/Supply Management - Forecast and Current
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : "Supplies" is definitely right; forecast and current I'm not so sure about.

Yeah Phil, me neither
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : with you and Phil on the supplies and you make a good case for the P&A

ta Gallagy2
neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Agree with "approvsionnement" for "appro" in view of "gestion des stocks" which precedes. Not enough context for P and A, although as Gallgy2 says, your suggestion makes sense. Check with client for P and A?

as concerns Personnel and Administration

"Appros" must be a typo and is likely à propos, or apropos; "as concerns". The entire sentence is ungrammatical, so it is hard to tell if apropos applies to stock or P&A. In any case it doesn't really add anything.

P&A is definitely personnel and administration as indicated by the overwhelming references to it in connection with French retail.

I would interpret this as:

Retail training: stock management, personnel and administration, inventory control, and store keeping.

On second thought, "appros" could be slang for approvisionnement, and then used in plural form. However I still do not see a way of including that either without it being more redundant in English than it already is in French.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : In context, approvisionnement would make perfect sense where stock, inventaire, magasinier etc are mentionned. However, "personnel and administration" seems to be unsuited to the context; asker cld check with client on that.//Yes but in relation to stock?

I agree on appros, see my note above. As for P&A, I did a search of French websites and *all* of them with "P&A" described it as personnel and adminsitration, usually in retail, job announcements for managers, etc.
neutral Catharine Cellier-Smart : "Appros" most certainly IS short for approvisionnement, and as Nikki says I can't see how Personnel & Administration would fit in here with the context of stock management.

Parts and Accessories Management

P&A = Parts and Accessories.

It used to be cool to pepper EN with FR words and witticisms...:-)
