German term

eidg. dipl. Buchhalter/Controller

German to English Bus/Financial Accounting
Gleichzeitig erlangte ich die Diplome „Buchhalter mit eidg. Fachausweis“ und
„eidg. dipl. Buchhalter/Controller“.

This is the second part of my question, as only one term per question is allowed, please also see the question for „Buchhalter mit eidg. Fachausweis“

I am having trouble differentiating between these two "diplomas", as far as I can figure out, the "dipl." in this case is not a degree, but a qualification gained after a combination of work experience plus two or three years of part-time courses. Many Google matches for this use some write-around along the lines of "Swiss certified accountant", but that can be found for both these qualifications. Any ideas?

federally chartered accountant/auditor

A Diplom is a higher qualification than a Fachausweis:

"Das Diplom bildet die nächsthöhere Stufe des Fachausweises, der mit einer eidgenössischen Berufsprüfung erteilt wird."

I suggest using the English distinction between "certified" and "chartered" as an approximate equivalent.
Note from asker:
That approach could work... am still waiting to see what (or if) other answers come up, but this looks promising. Thanks!

Thanks - but that's what I suggested for the asker's other question about Fachausweis.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "There does seem to be a great deal of overlap in the meaning of certified/chartered throughout the English world, instead of it really being two distinct levels like Bachelers vs. Masters, but the Swiss versions apparently also greatly overlap from what I've been reading. As this is not for an academic paper or something, it ist just an "introducing our new staff members" text for a newsletter, I think certified + chartered works fine. Thanks!"

'certified' accountant/controller

This is akin to CA (chartered accountant) in the UK and other Commonwealth countries where the accountants are certified to sign annual P & L accounts and the balance sheet.

agree Laura Ball (X) : certified accountant/auditor. I meant to agree to this posting, not the other one. Apologies to all!

Controller Vs Comptroller¶
What is the difference is between a controller vs comptroller? At the end of the day, the controller vs comptroller relationship is not all too diverse. A controller is a person that is at the highest accounting level in an organization. In other words, he/she is the head of the financial division of a company. Controllers are responsible for the financial accounting reporting, analysis and interpretation to the executive management team. They also administer the internal controls within an organization. A comptroller must possess the same duties of a financial controller. There is not a significant difference in the roles of a controller versus comptroller. A comptroller definition is a senior accountant in a government organization, however, the duties of a comptroller and controller do not differ. However, there seems to be a slight difference between the two entities when examined at a closer level.
