Dutch term

meetweg

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general)
This is taken from a series of short marketing texts that I'm translating for a dealer that supplies parts for the automotive/agricultural industry.

One of the sections is headed: "Cilinders met inwendige meetweg"

It continues:

"De eerste stuurcilinders die ABC toepaste waren voorzien van een extern meetwegsysteem op de cilinder. Dit bleek te gevoelig voor verontreiniging tijdens zware inzet. In overleg met XYZ is daarop gezocht naar een betere oplossing. “Die hebben we gevonden in de cilinder met ingebouwde meetweg”"

Discussion

John Holloway May 16, 2012:
Or, better still, stroke measurement (system) This may fit better, in this context, the distance being measured being the stroke or 'travel' of the cylinder. For 'stroke measurement', see http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6946968.html (Note: 'stroke measurement' would also fit in at the end of the sentence without adding 'system' - as per the source version.

Distance measurement (system)? See the diagram bottom right of page @ http://www.umarex-laserliner.de/video/data/MeterMaster_nl.ht... - it shows a wheelbarrow obstructing the 'meetweg' of apparatus measuring the width of a room. The term 'distance measurement' can be seen in context @ http://www.moduloc-usa.com/laser-distance-measurement-system... - I think the word 'systeem' is perhaps missing, as last word in the passage you quoted.

Reference:

test track, measuring lengths, range

FWIW:

These, I find to be unreliable translations, because I can't confirm them through independent sources or other credible references. Not only that, I'm not an expert in automotive engineering etc, BUT... perhaps this info can fire off some neurons of your own or put someone else on the path to provide a suitable translation.

HTH

Eurodicautom: http://is.gd/0mRffq (test track) - synonymous with parcours de mesure (in French)

This also uses "test track" http://trid.trb.org/view.aspx?id=109840 but it's from a Norwegian author and I'm not certain what "test track" actually refers to.

Heidenhain (also in NL) uses "measuring lengths" for "meetweg" when referring to its length gauges. http://www.heidenhain.com/en_US/products-and-applications/le...
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree John Holloway : I think 'measuring length' is right - see my separate discussion entry ('measuring distance').
