Merriam Webster говорит, что external student - это a student studying outside the university at which he has matriculated and from which he expects to receive a degree.

Не думаю, что вольнослушатели получают диплом/степень по окончании курса.

Есть еще такое уточняющее определение: All courses for which the student is enrolled involve special arrangements whereby lesson materials, assignments etc. are delivered to the student, and any associated attendance at the institution is of an incidental, irregular, special or voluntary nature.
