English term
will (on)
English to French
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
Contexte :
X had lived in fear of him, but she remembered willing her mother on, hoping, just for once, that she would finally explode, make a stand against his bullying, and vowing that she would never let herself be treated in that way.
Merci

: I think an importan tpoint is that she did not actually say or do anything - her prayer as it were remains UNSAID. Nevertheless 'inciter' implies some sort of outward gesture - here the poignancy is in her UNEXPRESSED rooting for her mum, as an ONLOOKER

'avoir désiré avec tout son coeur que sa mère continue... '
The daughter is giving the mother the will to go on, despite the fear see discussion notes
Discussion
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/will
'on' suggests 'to continue', so the daughter seems to be 1) internally 'giving' the mother the strength to continue and then 2) hoping etc...
So I would be more inclined to agree with Laurette T, and even to suggest the more active verb 'désirer' - 'avoir désiré avec tout son coeur que... '
e.g. The $1,000,000 prize willed Nadal on to win Wimbledon.

In context did the daughter seem close to her mother, did she communicate a lot, or did a lot of what she felt go unsaid?
