Would this be a grate or a vent that the passenger fell on? I'm just wondering why it's in the plural.

it reminds me of the sort of grate-style manhole you get for water drainage at the side of the road or, as I've seen in some underground systems, adjacent to the walls. I just can't remember what they're called!

Vent

It is definitely vent. But often they are not in the station but outside, on the street, and the tube passes underneath them. Either plural or singular, there is no difference.

There was recently an accident where a woman kept walking and passed the yellow line on the floor and fell off the platform. It was on that station (Chapultepec). So maybe they are talking about that.

Possibly the grates that are on ground level in the streets of Mexico City.
