Spanish term

oportunidad para dar cuenta de las características de una producción

Spanish to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Museum exhibit - painting
Back to my essay to introduce an art exhibit. This is the first sentence, it's fairly simple but I cannot come up with something convincing. Thanks to all.

Esta muestra es una oportunidad para dar cuenta de las características de una producción, ciertamente poco conocida, dentro del arte mexicano del siglo XX.

Discussion

Charles Davis Jan 4, 2012:
Exhibition Is definitely standard usage in NYC and LA, for example. I'm not saying "exhibit" isn't used, just that I don't see it in US gallery websites, which I visit on a regular basis to check details.

In contemporary art, at least, artists and curators very often talk about "shows".
philgoddard Jan 4, 2012:
You're welcome!
I've been living in New Orleans for four years, but I despair of ever learning all the differences between our two languages. I was talking to a British visitor the other night, and he told me he drives trains. But if he tells Americans he's a train driver, they have no idea what he's talking about. He's a locomotive engineer.
teju (asker) Jan 4, 2012:
So true, I did use it without thinking. The curator that I talked to has had experience previously working in an art museum in the Northeast, in the New England area. He was surprised when I told him about this distinction between UK and US English. I think it's fantastic that we have this opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from all over the world. Thank you for your comments Phil and Lisa.
philgoddard Jan 4, 2012:
Well, that's interesting. This is one of my specialist subjects, and I keep seeing (and hearing) "exhibit" used in the States where I (as a Brit living in the South) would use "exhibition". In fact you used it yourself in your question!
teju (asker) Jan 4, 2012:
To Phil and Lisa I just asked my client, an art museum curator in the US, about "exhibit" and "exhibition". He said he always uses "exhibition". Phil, who told you that in the US they prefer "exhibit"? Maybe it's a regional thing. I live the in the Southwest.
Lisa McCarthy Jan 4, 2012:
You learn something new every day :) Noun:
An object or collection of objects on public display in an art gallery or museum or at a trade fair.

Synonyms:
verb. display - show - expose - demonstrate - present
noun. display - exhibition - show - exposition
Lisa McCarthy Jan 4, 2012:
@ Phil I thought 'exhibit' was only used for a single item - an exhibit in a museum, one single piece as opposed to a collection of items.
teju (asker) Jan 4, 2012:
To Phil, my apologies. In my rush to post the question, I did not provide enough context. Here is the whole paragraph:
philgoddard Jan 4, 2012:
Teju Please provide full context with each question. It's extra work for us to go and look at another question you've asked.
Note to UK readers: We say exhibition, Americans say exhibit. I only discovered this recently.
teju (asker) Jan 4, 2012:
Hi Lisa The whole first paragraph is copied in the question I asked after this one. That provides much more context. They are not referring to only one artist. Thank you for helping!
Lisa McCarthy Jan 4, 2012:
Hi Teju Are they referring to an artist's works, one work in particular, or an art form?

As a example sentence, I would write something like:

"This exhibition (if this is what it is) provides an opportunity to explore the characteristics of a series/collection of little-known works of 20th-century Mexican art." (or "Mexican art of the 20th centruy")

or indeed "The aim of this exhibition is to provide an insight into etc"

As it's an opening sentence, I think it's important to keep it fairly snappy in EN. With that in mind, I've been quite free and tried to approach it as if writing it as an original text.

I've found that "muestra" (normally understood in the scientific field as "sample") can also be used as exhibit, which probably fits the context better.
Producción has been explained in one link as "conjunto de obras"
"Dar cuenta de" I see as being explained as Giving an account of, answer for, account for.
You might say: This exhibit is an opportunity to account for the characteristics of a collection of pieces, albeit not very well known, of twentieth century Mexican art.

I hope that sheds some light on the area!
All the best!
