Gennady Lapardin (asker) Nov 13, 2011:
P.S. "гештальт" и "холистик"- не по теме, не нравится заказчику. Уточнение: "целостный [внутренний] образ", т.к. речь об identity. У старшей возрастной группы целостность (identity integrity) выше.

Note from asker:
Спасибо Эрика! Бальзам на душу с "integral", НО (aber): "integral self-image through constantly synthesising the expectations others have of them" в данном случае others нету, все "внутренно". Image мне не нравится.
Peer comment(s):

agree Rachel Douglas : "integral self-image", with a hyphen. The asker may not like "image", but millions of psychologists write about the "integral self-image", and they do also talk about "a higher level of integration".

coherent self-image

This is also used in English psychology writing, in contexts similar to those Erika cites for "integral".

But I think "integral" is probably a better choice in your context.

Gennady, I'm not sure where you get the idea that "coherent" implies an external criterion, whereas "integral" would not. "Coherent" means, for example, having "unambiguous connectedness and logical or aesthetic interrelation of parts: fit[ting] together naturally and consistently with suitable order, proportion," etc. In the examples I saw of "coherent personality" in psychology writings, they were talking about an internal state.

If "integral is the word I always stick to," meaning that you are already sure, I'm not sure why you asked the question. But, in any event, I don't think one would need a degree in psychology in order to see - from looking at texts written by psychologists - that there is no validity to the assertion that "coherent" with respect to self-image or identity is used only in the case where an external criterion or measure is required for defining it. I was only trying to help, because it appeared to me that some categorical preconceptions about how English terms are used in psychology might be blocking your way to a good translation.

In any event, here are 11 published books containing "coherent self-image" as well as the words "psychology" and "gender" (because your context evidently has something to do with that).

And here are two published books containing Erika's "integral self-image" + psychology, but not gender (which probably doesn't matter that much). One of them is a translation from Russian, so perhaps that is relevant.
https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=1&tbm=bks&q="integra...

More than that I can't say, but I hope it helps.
Note from asker:
Thank you! 'Coherent' implies a criterion, on my view, but the question is about the integrity of one's own identity, where initially you have no criterion, you search it in yourself. These are extremely intricate specialistic issues. Thank you!
"whereas "integral" would not. " - in Russian it is called kommunalka-style discussion ;) 'Integral' is the word I stick always to. Rachel, this is specialistic term, which resembles colloquial word combination. If you offer a 100% reference, it's okey. Otherwise I prefer that you have psychologist degree or rich translation experience in this field. Thank you for taking an active part.
The customer is highly sensible to exact choice of the terminology (must relate to their narrow field. I am not a lecturer of psychology, but believe me, there is big difference in terminology, between their methods). When asking, I specified whom I addressed to. Your activity is true surprise to me. Thank you!
Peer comment(s):

agree rikka : I would not comment on the term in question, but fair play to you for your patience, Rachel

Thanks, Rikka. Personally, I do think that the psychologists' term "integral" or "integrated" is likely what they mean.
