English term

void

English to Spanish Law/Patents Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs US Tax Certificate
This is an odd one. It is a sheet of paper headed DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY - INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE, and is a certificate that xxx is a resident of the US for purposes of US-Spain tax convention.

However, there is what appears to be a watermark over the whole of the page stating the word VOID repeated in large and faint lettering over the whole page.

This all seems rather odd . Anybody come across this before??

I am not adding anything useful I just want to say that the comment "el certificado ese no les vale ni para envolver las magdalenas" made me laugh at loud. My grandma used to say that!

Patrick Great link. We are asking the client whether it can be seen on their copy and will let you know. Thanks for your help. I must say I've never come across this before.
patinba Sep 5, 2011:
Exactly ...it only appears when photocopied, to tell you the document is not an original.
I found this: Hidden Message (Void Background)Technology
www.highsecuritypaper.com/security-paper-information.html - CachedHidden Message Void Background technology, Void background security ... light to view the SECURE WATERMARKTM security paper watermark in the paper ..

Patrick Thanks, that thought went through my head too. I'm wondering if it only appeared when they copied or scanned it to send to us for translation. We'll have to ask whether this can be seen on the original.
Simon Bruni Sep 5, 2011:
Agree with Patinba It's probably an unofficial photocopy or scanned file.
patinba Sep 5, 2011:
Security It is a tamper-resistant "watermark" to prevent photocopying, and definitely non-translatable. It you can see it, it is a photocopy, or an unauthorised copy.

This question comes from my colleague who is a Spanish lawyer-sworn translator, whose comment was:

"A mí me ha extrañado mucho también lo de VOID (si es nulo, el certificado ese no les vale ni para envolver las magdalenas....)"

it's just a form
cannot be used
usual practice to make sure that this form copy won't be used
