Discussion

medeast (asker) Aug 12, 2011:
It's clear that "lion" in this sentence refers to the zodiac sign. "Like a true leo" is works perfectly. Many thanks for all of your suggestions and comments.
polyglot45 Aug 12, 2011:
if this text is very recent it has to be "Leo" (zodiac sign) - from memory Leo is from 20-something of July to 20-something of August. Right now in other words.
emiledgar Aug 12, 2011:
Yes, zodiac
Timothy Rake Aug 12, 2011:
I could suggest... If that's the way you're leaning, perhaps "{as) vigorous as a Leo" which perhaps conveys the sense of the health of a lion, while playing on the aspect that Leo's are "healthy and full of vitality." On the flip side, "healthy as a lion" is a metaphor with instant comprehensibility, whereas "Just like a Leo" – as true to the text as may be possible – could be obscure in meaning for readers. It's one of those things: am I true to the text? or do I feel "translating the message" clearly is the most important thing to do here? Your call. Bonne chance!
medeast (asker) Aug 12, 2011:
I have read and reread the text. I am more inclined now to think that "lion" refers here to Leo. I appreciate the insight. Astrology is the furthest thing from my mind.
medeast (asker) Aug 12, 2011:
Your comments are helpful. "Healthy as a lion" seems to fit well with the rest of the text.
Timothy Rake Aug 12, 2011:
re: sporran that crossed my mind, too; you could very well be right, in which event it might read, "in the sign of Leo" or "True as a Leo" or "Just like a Leo"...
sporran Aug 12, 2011:
This might be referring to Leo, the sign of the zodiac, since Leos are reputed to enjoy excellent health and vitality:-)

healthy as a (young) lion

I've never heard this collloquial expression – may be a "presonal" invention, but from the context, I'd say "healthy as a lion" or "like a young lion" –
in this instance "bon" > young, by virtue of fact a "good lion" is probably a healthy young one.
Peer comment(s):

neutral cc in nyc : maybe, though at 67, not so young ;-)

yeah, but that's the point... he's expressing he FEELS young, and thus the emphasis on "BON lion". I'm sure, otherwise, there are plenty of lions running around who are NOT healthy!
neutral writeaway : where does 'healthy as' come into it? " the zodiac sign "Leo" was the first thing that came to mind when I read the question-as colleagues in D box state as well.

Like a good lion

I know, I know, it's not very flashy sounding. But I don't think the French is, either. It's a standard expression when referring to a characteristic of any astrological sign. On the English side of it, I had an aunt who was VERY into astrology (she even made charts for every child born into the family) and was always telling me that I was being a "good Sagittarius" because I was a traveler, because I had animals, etc.!

Anyway, up to you to make this expression align with the rest of the individual's statements! :)
