Spanish term

Giro

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
I am translating a contract which deals with company A supplying equipment for 2 submarines pertaining to company B. The following is part of the "Description of the System":

El Procesador tendrá la capacidad instalada de recibir por puertas de entrada separadas, señales de Rumbo y Velocidad (bien sea a través del DDS o desde una señal directa de Giro y Corredera), asi proporcionará al buque esta capacidad redundante.

I understand that the Corredera (Dutchman's log) is an actual physical tool that will provide information on speed.
The "Giro" will provide information on the course or direction of the vessel. But what is a "Giro"? Is it an actual physical tool? Some kind of sensor? Most importantly, what is its name in English?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

heading indicator/directional giro

In submarine, as in aviation, there's a machine for telling you which way the ship is pointing. Gyroscopic devices are used to provide the stability needed in this kind of vessel. The "giro" will tell you in which direction the ship is pointing.
The log will tell you how far the ship has gone. By combining the two you can tell, more or less, where you have been.
Dutchman's log refers to the now ancient technique of throwing something overboard to judge the vessels speed, not really a practical proposition in a submarine. Log is quite sufficeint. Good luck!
